girl and clothes

Clothes and Girl are two very different short stories, and each story is strongly influenced by the authors surroundings. Clothes, by Divakaruni, shows the world of an Indian woman, whose life is dictated by Indian customs. She wears established Sari, and sees casual American clothes as something very lavish. They symbolize a difference from her societal norm, and is one illustration of how she and her husband embrace modern Californian culture. This is further seen in the end of the story, when she rejects her role as a widow, and old fashioned Indian woman, and instead chooses to live like a modern American. Girl, by contrast, is a short piece, that is based of South African American culture. The incoherent work details what society expects of a woman of the time, giving a seemingly never ending list of how to live a life as a proper woman. The rules detail everything from how to catch a fish to how to abort a baby. This shows how women of the time, even when they kept to tradition, did things that even a modern woman might find surprising.
